iPhone Apps – Try before you buy

by Glenn

Google Buzz

Would you marry to a girl you haven’t seen yet?

Yes, I am talking about buying iPhone apps without knowing what’s in them. Recently, Apple has decided to start “Try before you buy” section on iPhone AppStore.

Now you may wonder that most of the iPhone apps are paid with a lite version, which allows you to have a free trail. Then why try before you buy section? A fairly simple reason is that many iPhone paid apps don’t comes with lite version and when you buy them from iPhone AppStore you never know what’s coming.

iPhone app saving lives!

by Glenn

Google Buzz

A couple of days back a story broke out about an American who saved lives using an iPhone app in the Haiti disaster. Don Wolley, used an iPhone medical app named Pocket First aid and CPR to assist people under the rubble in the disastrous situation in Port-au-Prince. As the story caught media coverage, not just the success of the app itself grew in popularity but the significance of medical apps grew on the whole.

The App received such a boost from the story that it left behind big names like Shazam. The app climbed to top 50 paid apps on the app store.

Starbuck shines with new iPhone App!

by Glenn

Google Buzz

Starbuck has introduced an iPhone application for their customers. The application is proving to be a great success primarily because the ease that it offers. The application allows users to locate the nearest Starbuck outlet but that’s not the real grasp.
Using the iPhone app you can place orders! Yes you heard it right. The application allows you to select what type of coffee you prefer, and then also lets you customize it. You can select from all the available ranges and then add in modifiers like milk, cream, size, extra hot etc. The app also allows you to store your friend’s favorite drinks

This is really helpful to the workaholics and other fans of coffee. Placing your order in advance saves time and frees you from standing in the long waiting lines. You can pay for your coffee via the “Quick Pay” system. Have you used the app yet? Do let me know if you do. As far as I think it is a great app by Starbuck and users will like it a lot.

Restructuring of iPhone App Store – Bad News for Small Developers!

by Glenn

Google Buzz

After the last Apple event that introduced a new structure of the App store with iTunes9 releasing, the iPhone developers do not seem to be very happy. The new structure is intended to bring unlikable changes to the development process for the iPhone apps.

The new design stresses to introduce a browsing area for each category but it fails to streamline browsing by subcategories. This brings us down to the point where it gets difficult for the small scaled apps, which previously attained top rank in the subcategories, to promote their apps this way and would now be trying to make their way through broader categories. This means that the smaller developers would be experiencing less exposure in the app store as their small apps would look tinier in the larger categories.

As the exposure for many of the apps droops after iTinues9 release, chances are that sales will also see a decline in its growth. In fact, few of the developers have even reported a drop in their sales after the new restructuring.

iPhone developers from small and self-governing development houses are not at all happy to see Apple making decisions in favor of established development houses only. The new app store design is clearly giving way to big fishes in the pond, while small developers loose visibility in the store. There’s one single star of hope twinkling that Apple might be generous enough and may adopt some methodology that would give promotional prospects to the small developers as well.

Is Gameloft the Biggest Shop in App Store?

by Glenn

Google Buzz

Just recently, Gameloft, a company that offers downloadable video games, announced that it has sold over 6 million games for iPhones through the App Store. App store, a selling house for apps, is not older than 14 months. Considering the fact that store is in its early stages as yet, a gaming studio selling over 6 million gaming iPhone apps is literally amazing.

According to Michel Guillemot, Chairman and CEO, Gameloft:

“From the distribution model to the types of games available, the App Store has completely revolutionized the way handheld games are played, perceived and received. Our strategy from the onset has been twofold. First we deliver an aggressive line-up of high quality games and then we adapt in real time to consumer needs. With over 6 million paid games sold, it has proven to be quite successful.”

Gameloft covers a wide array of gaming categories, ranging from casual to action to sporty ones. With their hands on gaming expertise, they are available in the app store with 35 games currently, of which 18 are ranked in the top 10 paid games list. Company is dedicated to produce about 15 to 30 of more such games by the end of this year, with a firm held believe in iPhone OS.

Gameloft’s most popular games include: Gangster – west coast hustle, NFL2010, UNO, The Oregon Trail, Assassin’s Creed – Altair’s Chronicles and Guitar Rock Tour 2.

Spotify iPhone App – Out on the App Store!

by Glenn

Google Buzz

Spotify’s iPhone app has long been in linger for app store’s approval. Europe targeting musical app subjected to rumors of resembling to iTunes created a strong hype in the market about its disapproval. However, the latest buzz about the app proves all rumors and false claims to be incorrect. Spotify has finally taken a seat in the app store!

Spotify fans will be able to enjoy music from their favorite providers on their iPhones pretty soon, as stated by Apple. Spotify was submitted a month back to go under a tedious testing process, conducted by the app store, but it ultimately saw approval and will be added to the app store very shortly.

It was a much anticipated app because analysts conjectured that it resembles to most of the iTunes features, so why would Apple allow any competitor app to enter the arena. While Spotify held a firm belief in their app and persisted on the fact that if Apple can approve Last.fm and Pandora like apps then why not spotify?

Below is a short review of the app, though it’s not physically out yet.

Spotify’s iPhone application works on both Wi-Fi and 3G. You don’t need to be connected to an internet for listening music anymore because of an offline mode option. All you have to do is to select the list that you want to play beyond 3G signals, and the app will harmonize the playlist on your iPhone. Playback resumes, adding tracks, setting up new playlists; it’s all available within the app. And between all this, one thing that is great is the sound quality. Spotify might be a tough competition to iTunes but we’ll have to wait and see who wins the battle.
