iWallet: Apple’s step into Mobile Commerce

by Glenn

Google Buzz

The next thing Apple has its eyes on is iWallet. The concept is very simple; an iWallet will be a Smartphone replacing your credit card for online transactions.

The iWallet hypothesis seems valid as we see two major things going in Apple’s way. New hiring and patent publications for mobile commerce related device makes it easier to believe in the iWallet phenomenon. Benjamin Vigier would be Apple’s product manager for mobile commerce, while NFC (Near Field Communication) technology will be used in iWallet.

Apple donates MacPaint to Computer History Museum

by Glenn

Google Buzz

Last week Businessweek published that Apple donated their original source code for MacPaint to the Computer History Museum.

The very well known MacPaint was launched in early 1984 with iMac, and is still remembered by everyone. MacPaint is a family member of the original Macintosh that was launched back in the same year. It was a fully loaded and well-featured device from APPLE Inc.Apple MacPaint

The technologists and computer scientists who are popular for first-of-their-own-kind creations in the past also reviewed the device with good words.

The people who are fond of photo editing and graphic designing, or have acute interest in Adobe Photoshop are effectively aware of MacPaint features, such as the lasso tool for selecting non-rectangular shapes, and the paint bucket for filling closed areas with a pattern.

Although inventions are unique when they are new but later with more competitive and advanced similar technological gadgets appearing in the niche, their abilities are reduced and they become history. The 18 page advertising brochure circulated with Time and Newsweek in December, 1983 introduced an ad with the concept of using a mouse to click on the screen. The MacPaint was pictured as an exemplar application that operates windows/mouse interface at the very young age of computers and technology. The MacPaint source code now exhibits 5,822 lines of Pascal and 3,583 lines of 68000 assemblies and early QuickDraw library that it includes, was actually based on 17,101 lines of 68000 assemblies.

Twist in the Tale: In-App purchases for FREE iPhone Apps!

by Glenn

Google Buzz

Apple has good news for iPhone developers; the company has allowed in-app purchases for free apps. This means that the famous Fremium model can now be implemented on the iPhone apps. This will lead to new opportunities for the developers who were looking for the monetization aspect of the iPhone apps to grow.

This is rather surprising news for all of us as Apple had clearly wiped out any hopes of allowing in-app purchases for free apps, when it had announced the model for the premium apps. In-app purchasing will prove to be a valuable point for free gaming apps. Developers will now be able to offer their apps for free downloading and once the user likes it he can purchase the enhanced features down the lane. This would also increase the number of installs and developers will not have to come with a new version of app just to introduce more features, as they did up till now.

According to some speculation, as to why Apple not initially allowed in-app purchases for the free apps, were basically two concerns that the company had. One being that this would open grounds for developers to entice users with the free useless content and later sell the improved features. The other concern was about Apple’s payment system, which will lose user’s credit card information if he buys free apps only. Seems like the company revised its policy for no clear reason because the concerns it had for not permitting it earlier remain intact.

For whatever reason may be, the news is great for iPhone developers. Let’s see how the app store now rages with free apps embedded with free in-app purchasing model.

Will Grand Theft Auto be the Next Rejected App?

by Glenn

Google Buzz

If you are one of the gaming freaks who were longing to see Grand Theft Auto series on their iPhones, then their luck just shined. Rockstar Games, the developers behind the scene just announced recently that they are going to bring their popular game, Grand theft Auto: China town Wars on the app store.

Chinatown Wars that is currently a hit on the Nintendo DS, is coming pretty soon on the Sony PlayStation in October, and is likely to hit app store after that.

Rockstar is confident enough to add its thrilling game, which already has a fan following, to the app store this fall. According to the company this is the perfect time for bringing the long deserved title to the iPhone.

The point of concern arises from the fact that the game is already imported from conventional handheld devices so how would it look different on the iPhone screen? In a reply, Rockstar clears that the game will render lower resolution textures on iPhones as in contrast to the PSP version.

One of the shocking things associated to all this is that Apple doesn’t allow adult-theme to enter in the app store so how would it give way to the Game Theft Auto Series that subjects adult-themes? Many of such apps have been rejected on such basis previously so would Game Theft be another app in the rejected store?

Company further elaborates on the app that the on-screen characters of the game will be somewhat different to control on iPhone as compared to other handheld devices. Game will be rendering an on-screen analog stick to be thumb controlled by users.

Grand Theft Auto is a popular game on other platforms already but looking at its features that are against APPLE store’s policies, it might not be able to get an entry pass in the app store. And if somehow Apple allows Rockstar then the apps rejected on similar basis might stand up against the company and claim their right. So may be gamers should stick playing grand Theft on their PlayStations only.

Apple achieves another milestone – Introducing iPhones in China!

by Glenn

Google Buzz

China will also enjoy the pleasures of iPhone now! China Unicom, biggest telecom services provider in Chine, announced its deal with Apple for selling iPhones in the region.

Details followed a three years deal conceptualized on 28th August, 2009 and is expected to launch later this year. The company will be bringing both the iPhone 3GS and the previous version of iPhone in the mobile market. In both cases, devices will not be carrying the Wi-Fi functionality as this was the major bone of contention between the two telecom giants, Apple and China Unicom.

Talking of China Unicom and Apple, the former is definitely bigger – It’s bigger than you think! It stands as the second largest mobile provider in China and third largest in the world. Its cellular subscribers account of 140 million while AT&T comes close to its half, having at 78 million subscribers.

Chine has about 700 million cellular subscribers. If Apple manages to draw subscribers from China Unicom and a few such other companies in the region, it’ll able to expand its subscriber base to a huge potential. This sounds a good deal for Apple!

iPhone is already available in 80 countries and its sales graph continues to see height, especially in US. With iPhone coming to China, it’ll be interesting to notice the changing sales trends and see if it would be able to gain the same amount of popularity in China as it gained in US.
