On September 2012, 12 month ending from the last year, it has been seen that mobile app economy is flourished with 43.6 billion app downloads, worldwide. In this race Apple is still leading and facing criticism of competitors that it is already used App Store as a trademark and thus leading the market in app category. The above shared figures have been issued by ABI Research.
Vastly there are two major parameters on which success of app stores have been measured and these are sales and numbers of downloads. However, ABI Research has added two new parameters for encountering the success and these are innovation and implementation and scored them out of 100. The selection of parameters was based on the fact that Apple store is quite huge in number and surely will win the race from the app store of Microsoft which is quite small and thus for indicating the success they have noticed that how app developers would love to place their developed apps. The results turned out as, Apple is leading app market with 80.8 marks, followed by Android with 72.2 points whereas, Microsoft is lacking behind with 63.9 points out of 100. With these figures, Aapo Markkanen, the ABI analyst has noted that Microsoft has actually defeated Apple in terms of innovation by getting 77 points, Apple is lacking behind with 76 points.
This is of course not a big surprise, as Microsoft has just entered the market with 200,000 apps compared to 600,000 apps of Google Play Store and 700,000 of Apple App Store.
Markkanen shared his views that Microsoft is adopting app charting approach and listing top paid and top free apps. He believes that apps with modest but loyal users and highly engaged customers will boost sales rather than the most frequently app downloaded yet un-retain users. He further added that this way of marketing is much better than the ads added on mediocre apps and this will promote the underdog and great apps in better manner. If more and more developers will consider this paradigm of success, people will also change their way of assessing chart.
Markkanen firmly stick at the point that if algorithm for the company is less holistic and focused on heavy downloads, it will be more suspect to manipulation. He noted that storefront charts are surely the real kingmakers for the discovery of apps. And in this regards, Microsoft has done fairly better job than Apple and Google and they are leading behind Microsoft in terms of innovation.
